We present this
exhibition of drawings by the late sculptor, Jacques Schnier,
with great pride and affection. From the late 1920s through the
1930s, the bold, idealized forms, later to be known as Art Deco,
figured prominently in the Bay Area artist's work. However,
Schnier's style transcended the slick, decorative genre because
his aesthetic grew out of a passionate, life-affirming spirit.
Our exhibit features fine life drawings, working drawings for
civic projects, and sketches for publicly and privately
commissioned bas reliefs and sculptures.
The works reveal
an inspired elegance and simplicity which was the lifelong
hallmark of Schnier's oeuvre. There is sincerity, strength and
absolute poise in all that he created. As his long and
productive career evolved from engineer/artist through lay
analyst to sculptor/teacher his creative voice sang unfailingly
with clarity, reverence and joy.
We invite you to
enjoy with us a part of the special world of Jacques Schnier,
consummate artist and dear friend.
